Total energy used in PJ - Total energy used is calculated from electricity purchased, energy generated from biomass and fossil fuels consumed. 1 petajoule (PJ) = 1 million gigajoules (GJ).
Kriel - Kriel and Zibulo form part of the Anglo Inyosi Coal BBBEE Company of which Anglo American Thermal Coal owns 73%. The outstanding conditions precedent to the transaction have been fulfilled.
Amapá - Production from Amapá is included from 5 August 2008. Amapá production for full year 2008 was 1.2 Mt. At 31 December 2009 Amapá was not in commercial production and therefore to this date all revenue and related costs were capitalised. Commercial production commenced on 1 January 2010.

Ore Reserve and Mineral Resource estimates

- Coal Reserves are quoted on a Saleable reserve tonnage basis which represents the product tonnes produced from coal processing, with moisture content on an "as delivered" basis.
- The coal quality for the Coal Reserves is quoted as either Calorific Value (CV) or Crucible Swell Number (CSN) on a Gross As Received (GAR) basis. Coal quality parameters for the Coal Reserves for Coking, Metallurgical and Export Thermal collieries meet the contractual specifications for coking coal, PCI, metallurgical coal, steam coal and domestic coal. Coal quality parameters for the Coal Reserves for Domestic Power and Domestic Synfuels collieries meet the specifications of the individual supply contracts. CV is rounded to the nearest 10 kcal/kg and CSN to the nearest 0.5 index.
- Coal Resources are quoted on a Mineable Tonnage In-Situ (MTIS) basis in million tonnes which are in addition to those resources which have been modified to produce the reported Coal Reserves. Coal Resources are on an in-situ moisture basis.
- The coal quality for the Coal Resources is quoted on an in-situ heat content as Calorific Value (CV) on a Gross As Received (GAR) basis.CV is rounded to the nearest 10 kcal/kg.
Production and sustainable development figures are updated annually. Production figures include the entire output of consolidated entities and the Group's share of joint ventures, joint arrangements and associates where applicable, except for De Beers, which are quoted on a 100% basis.
